This would be yet another unfunded mandate on institutions of higher education. Less and less money is given to colleges and universities by the state and federal government, so these unfunded mandates force colleges and universities to cut corners elsewhere. Laws like this one add one other layer of obligation that is not within the institutions' purview. Colleges and universities should hand these cases over to the local legal authorities and stick to their jobs, educating our students. All of us who work in higher education want to protect our students, both those who are victims of assault and their alleged perpetrators. We live in a society of laws, and believe that people are innocent until proven guilty. As such, institutions of higher learning should not be placed in the middle person role between victims of assault and the people they accuse of assault. This should be relegated to the local authorities.
