My personal belief is that immigration, or any other system of passage, should be merit-based. Not to discredit the ethics of all contemporary immigrants, but when my family (on both sides) immigrated sixty years ago, they toiled away and took care of their numerous children. Did they receive government assistance or subsidies? Yes, but they weren't firm believers in having the government take care of them. They embodied the true notion of independence and took the initiative to prosper. Today, my mother, father and their siblings are a byproduct of their values. Their ethics are what makes America great; not a lottery system designed to arbitrarily select strangers that don't undergo proper vetting. They could have a criminal history or worse. Anyway, I'm sure there are many angles towards this system, but this is simply my outlook. I'm looking forward to reading everyone else's input!
