Here's how this needs to work: First and foremost, we have to respect the First Amendment. Next, "News" and "non-news information and entertainment" should be labeled as such. There needs to be a strict definition of what can be labeled "News," i.e. "Accurate and factual given the information available at the time, and not intended to mislead." This definition needs to be applied to articles distributed by all parties claiming to be news outlets. Sources should be cited. Anything else should be labeled as "For information and/or entertainment only." Violations should be fined significantly, and multiple violations should be a cause for a termination of broadcasting rights, etc. We as a people need to think more critically about the information we consume, and especially about the information we disseminate. Citizens of this country should hold our representatives accountable for slander, libel, lies and other statements made with the intent to mislead by voting them out of office. Where is the professionalism and integrity?
