What lost me is seeing the argument in favor calling this a "First Amendment right." This isn't a first amendment right! You find me where in the first amendment the freedom of speech is accompanied by a freedom from consequences! The first amendment says that the government cannot condemn or censor or forbid or outlaw my speech - and that's because there's not another government I can go to if I get on the bad side of this one. A private company absolutely has the right to take action - you don't have a right to that job and if I as the employer don't like what you're saying, I'm going to take MY job, which I gave to you, back.
