The global climate change we are experiencing has been enabled by capitalism. In order to live healthily and hopefully, we must act on as many opportunities for sustainability as possible. To live sustainably means to live consuming resources within the time it takes for that resource to replenish itself. Capitalism does not allow sustainability. Our current means of production has never allowed sustainability. To see real changes, the system MUST be disrupted. This disruption will make people uncomfortable. I know I love my car, it allows me independence and convenience in a large city with poor (but growing!) public transit. However, I recognize the negative environmental impact I make when I get gas, am in traffic, and drive somewhere easily within walking distance. Change is uncomfortable, and we are attached to our system so much we cannot fathom our society transitioning out of it this quickly. Those who oppose the Green New Deal could be scared of change, or they could be scared of the system to longer benefitting them. The system (capitalism) benefits capitalists. Capitalists benefit from global climate change. Capitalists would rather perish on a dying planet than live equally.
