In my opinion the opposition to this law is that either a.) people feel like minorities shouldn't get special treatment or b.) people feel that it is hard to prosecute a hate crime because it's hard to find evidence. Yet this law works to better our society and push our culture forward so that maybe one day people will not be treated differently due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. So it's not trying to give minorities special treatment but rather trying to even out a very uneven playing field. The second point is yes it is hard to prosecute a hate crime and that it was this law seeks to alleviate. It is extremely hard to prosecute a hate crime because we cannot read minds, and evidence is hard to procure. This bill would help create a situation where crimes will be prosecuted as hate crimes or not based on perceived intention rather then the irrelevant details of whether or not state boundaries were crossed.
