An individual mandate is the only way to enforce that healthy people are signed up and not just the sick. If we're not going the route of Medicare "Part E" (as in "Everyone"), the mandate is the only option. It's worked just fine in MA and insurers still make plenty of profit, so don't give me any crap about this being a burden on them. And for those who say they shouldn't have to buy insurance when they're healthy -- Yeah, actually, you DO. Because you won't always BE healthy, and making a trip to the emergency room for an accident is extremely costly; even more costly is that same trip for something that could have been found in a routine checkup that you didn't bother to get because you didn't want to spend the money or take the time. That's not just costly in dollars, it costs you, your loved ones, and others stress and worry and lost income.
