I am all for this. The IRS already knows exactly how much we owe (or are owed), down to the penny. I see no reason why they can’t send us a pre-filled form every year to sign and send back. If we disagree on how much we owe (or are owed) due to things like charitable donations, changes in marital status, etc, then we can make the necessary adjustments on the form itself and send them back, with the IRS sending us a corrected/updated form later on. If we then agree, sign and send back.
The only reason it’s difficult and complicated now is because companies like TurboTax and H&R Block WANT it that way, so you’ll pay them money to do it for you. If it’s as simple as signing and sending back a pre-filled form, then why would you want to pay someone else to do it for you?
But I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that this bill fails. If it does (and it probably will), then it’s because the companies I mentioned above (and others like them) are PAYING LOBBYISTS to convince Congress NOT to pass it, despite what the American people want.
