I’m a Puerto Rican man. I was born and raised in the island, and lived there until I graduated high school. I am for the independence of Puerto Rico, and hope to see my island a free, autonomous nation in my lifetime. However, I believe that if Puerto Ricans voted to become a state, Congress should take that request seriously. We’ve been second-class citizens for over 100 years. We’ve fought in wars with the American army and had our economy subjugated to federal law since becoming a US territory. All this without a vote in Congress it being able to vote in presidential elections. I understand that our financial situation is abysmal, but we are largely in this situation because of US policies for its territories. It’s too late for Congress to turn their back on us. While I may not agree with my fellow citizens if they opted to become a state, I’d respect that choice and hope that Congress would too. (And yes, I’m aware of the recent plebiscite, but turnout was so low, I’m not convinced it represents a majority of Puerto Ricans in the island.
