No shortcuts on environmental review! The main reason that federal agencies are having a difficult time implementing landscape restoration projects is that they keep getting underfunded. Specifically, most of the offices are short-staffed because they are dealing with the after effects of that idiotic hiring freeze and shrinking budgets that make filling necessary positions impossible. If you don't have the professionals on staff that can do the reviews, it slows everything down. Thoughtful vegetation management practices, that include sustainable logging are good for our forests. But we need to be smart about it. Just go visit the tracts that were "chained" in the 60s and 70: and you'll see what poor logging practices can do to a landscape.
