I am aware that all those who represent me in Congress, save one, are on the same page as I am on this issue. So I direct a particular disappointment toward Sen. Marco Rubio and his newfound silence on this matter. Our people benefited from legal immigration loopholes carved out for Cubans, so any Cuban making pretense of immigration legalities is a hypocrite by definition. The law didn't work for us, so we had the law changed. And in our prosperity, our community has become the poster child of why immigration and generous policies toward refugees make America great. Older Cubans like my abuela may have a Bay of Pigs blind spot toward what has happened to the Republican Party, but younger Cubans do not. Increasingly, we join our brethren with origins in other parts of the Spanish-speaking world in solidarity against draconian immigration measures and against Trump, our own American caudillo. Your future as a leader in this state hangs upon understanding this, as I suspect you already do. But for the present moment, it will take courage to stare down your party and your Know Nothing president to help those huddled masses yearning to breathe free under the aegis of America, as our families once did, but as your esteemed colleague Sen. Gillibrand of New York said, "if we're not helping people we should go the fuck home." Indeed, it can't be any better said than that. Protect DACA. Protect immigrants. Do what is right.
