My first impression was that the “free airtime” legislation was the Fairness Doctrine reincarnated. The Fairness Doctrine was rescinded under the Reagan Administration. Thus, my preliminary reaction was “NAY”. Next, I read the details, pro and con. The pro argument detail that Europe does thus does not fly with me. We are America, NOT Europe. Also, the pro argument voiced concern about wealthy individuals and corporations bank-rolling candidates in which I saw the favorite Democratic talking point about blaming wealthy conservatives who worked hard in our capitalistic economic system. The YEA argument fails to mention that American labor unions contributed $1.7 BILLION to 2016 Democratic candidates and ZERO to Republicans. There was no outrage expressed about these humongous contributions. The NAY side, on the other hand, had a better argument, citing infringements of the 1st, 4th and 5th Amendments. The NAY side also pointed out the many communications channels that are available today (eg, Facebook with 2 BILLION subscribers, about 25% of the world’s population) as well as alternative funding mechanisms. No! This is bad policy and bad legislation and should completely disappear from the House entirely...and permanently.
