As a nurse, if the schedule is posted, the nurse must find someone to switch shifts. If it's an urgent situation the supervisor will often assist. It's a collaborative process. Those who never switch find it difficult to find someone to switch with them. Now many hospitals have a self scheduling process. It has rules so many weekend days, Mondays and Fridays. The worst part is logging on early on scheduling days. If some are little piggies about grabbing all the optimal days, the supervisor changes things to make it more equitable. It's not the end of the world and it can keep good employees.
