Understandably, it is in the best interests of the GOP to block the Presidents nominee. After all the death of Justice Scalia has left the Supreme Court in a delicate balance and it would serve the Republican party no good to have an outgoing president choose a Justice who may for a generation tip the Supreme Court to the left. HOWEVER, this goes beyond politics. It is the constitutional right and duty of the President to appoint SCOTUS justices and it is the duty of the senate to provide a fair hearing for any candidate in order to determine his/her suitability for the job. By simply refusing to allow for a fair process of apointment, we are undermining the very constitution that we strive to protect. It is the presidents job to nominate a candidate and the senate should respect this and in turn, do their job which is to (objectively as possible) decide whether or not the candidate would be an appropriate successor of Justice Scalia.
