When I was younger I expressed my First Amendment right to support political candidates by walking precincts and making telephone calls. Now that I am older I prefer to simply donate money to support my candidates. In this context the First Amendment must be construed to recognize that campaign donations are a form of free speech. At the same time Bernie and others are correct that democracy requires that something be done to level the playing field. Amending the Constitution is one alternative, although quite unlikely to happen. I think public financing is a more feasible option.
