I am opposed to this bill because I believe that a balance needs to be found between order and liberty. The safety of the people is important, but it is meaningless if it means that one branch or organization has the power to do anything that they want without reproach. Civil liberties have long been suppressed with legislation such as the PATRIOT act, which already expanded the powers of domestic law enforcement as well as foreign intelligence. It allowed them sweeping search and surveillance. America was founded on the basis of protecting civil rights and liberties, and any anti-terrorism legislation has to be careful in order to preserve a balance between liberties and safety. However, another reason that I am opposed to this piece of legislation is because it focuses on the possibility of foreign people committing terrorist acts, but not domestic terrorists. In a statement from the FBI, whose main priority is to protect against terrorism, they said that domestic terrorists are “the most persistent threat to the nation”. I think that it’s wrong to discriminate against foreign people with the stigma that they are responsible for most terrorist attacks, when the opposite is true. If any additional legislation is to be made to suppress terrorism, it should apply at both a national and internation level.
