Members of Congress should gain access to immigrant detention facilities upon request, and they should be able to spend 24 consecutive hours with the detainees! They should be uninhibited to obtain their information, take notes, testimonies, photos, and videos. Congressional members should be able to follow the children if separated, to keep a watchful eye on provable documentation, being given the opportunity to find and visit these children upon request, report back to their families, and share communications between the family and those separated.
These congressional members should be able to be present and monitor how families are processed, take notes on the actual documentation formally recorded, the records kept that are necessary to properly reunite children with their families, along with detailed accounting of the condition of the children as well as their whereabouts.
The Congressional members should be able to bring an assistant, who will be able to help with any documenting as well as provide a secondary and independent witness to the Member’s experience.
