The minimum wage needs to be raised. For over 20 years I have watched myself and many other middle to lower class, hard working people be shoved out of the economy as the prices of goods and services rose but our wages stayed the same. For whatever reason, business owners have shirked their responsibility to their workers (in terms of pay raises and/benefits) while continuing to demand higher productivity from their employees. And in spite of the increased productivity and increasing the bottom line, employers have failed to reward the workers. And while this year I finally saw a pay raise, the increase simply bumped my wage to the same level as my pay rate in my last college work study job - 17 years ago!!
Some argue that mandating an increase to the Federal minimum wage would cause a loss of jobs and present an undue burden to business owners. But this position completely disregards the singular purpose of Government: to endure the physical well being of its citizens. Every pay period I forgo a portion of my wages that goes to the collective good of my community as a whole. I may not directly benefit or even use some of the programs my taxes support. But I still contribute because it’s the law and the right thing to do. For over two decades employers have failed to do the right thing by offering pay raises that coincide with risings costs and the success of their businesses. And when citizens (business owners) fail to contribute their fair share or fail to act in a way that inherently disadvantages workers, then it is the duty of Government to act as referee and implement a mandatory increase to the minimum wage in order to create a more level playing field.
As for loss in jobs, the economy will always see a loss in jobs for a myriad of reasons independent of raising wages. The amount of jobs lost due to raising the minimum wages is offset by significantly larger growth in consumer spending capacity created by the wage hike. A concept I am sure Senator McSally is familiar with as supply side economics and it’s trickle down effect is a hallmark of Republican Economic Policy making.
Please support a bill that will raise the minimum wage to at least $15/hr or more. Thank you.
