Student loans have prevented me from taking that next step in life (buying a home, starting a family, etc.). I rather my monthly $600 student loan payment be part of a mortgage payment and property taxes to improve the community instead of throwing my money away in the form of a rent payment.
My generation was sold the idea that college was the only way to success while the cost of tuition has tripled over the past few decades. I took out the loans fully knowing that they had to be paid back but we entitled the Great Recession a year later. However, once you hit the job market, every employer wants experience and the only way to get that is through an unpaid internship.
The banks got bailed out and their CEO’s are doing just fine now. There is a student loan bubble that is affects 45M people and the cost of school is preventing people from going into medicine and science. Any bailout of student loans needs to be accompanied with large reforms of how student loans are structured or we are just going to repeat the same mistake.
