In 2010 I married my wife. Our marriage was not legally binding at the time. In 2011 we travelled to Iowa to visit family, and because it was legal there we got legally married. When we returned home to Phoenix, our now legal marriage was not recognized. Finally in 2014 the Supreme Court validated our marriage. We have a 10 year old daughter, and if the language of the law accurately reflects our family, she stands a better chance of being afforded the same rights as the rest of Americans. Mike pence used the incorrect language on marriage applications as justification to threaten gay people with jail simply for applying for a marriage license in Indiana. Language matters, it should reflect what the Supreme Court upheld, that our marriage is legitimate and we deserve the same rights and protections as every other American.
