America was NOT founded on Christianity. At the time of America's founding the religious sects, including the Christian ones, strongly petitioned the government for separation of church and state. The people who settled in the northeastern colonies had come to America because they didn't want the government telling them what to believe. The founding fathers believed that God gave man the right to choose his religious beliefs, including not to believe in God at all if he so chose. Out of this rose the concept of the separation of church and state which is supported by the First Amendment of the Constitution. To better understand the ideas regarding religion with which this country was founded, I strongly recommend citizens read Thomas Jefferson's Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom. A true American accepts that everyone has the right to follow whatever religious precepts they choose and not to impose their religious beliefs on others. It is completely inappropriate for the federal government to interfere with the practice of religion in America and to show favoritism for any religion. If this country really adhered to the First Amendment and the beliefs of the Founding Fathers religious holidays would be practiced in private and we wouldn't be engaging in silly "wars" over Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. This is a freedom of speech issue and everyone can use whatever expression they prefer. To insist that your way is the only acceptable way is disrespectful to others and their beliefs and a violation of their First Amendment rights. Lead your life according to your religious beliefs and allow everyone else to do the same.
