I've never rode on a long-distance train, Amtrak or otherwise, in the US. It doesn't seem to be very convenient, not in the Midwest at least. But if Amtrak were privatized, it would bear the burden of actually attracting enough customers and operating efficiently enough to make a profit, not just getting by on government money. And maybe we'd see a train system worth using once in a while. I'd be willing to ride the train and spend some time on travel, seeing our countryside out the window if the price was right compared to a plane ticket.
