Congress must retain the power of the purse. Threatened shutdowns of one section of Government or another are useful to bring public attention to the root cause or issues. If the news media does not do its job to focus attention on the real issue at hand, it should be up to Congressional members to bring the issue to the attention of the public in order to nudge Congress into some agreement or compromise. An example of where the news media failed to do its job recently was when Senators of one party chose to stall the debate and vote on a Senate Bill in order to support an allegedly unconstitutional action by the POTUS with regard to unilaterally creating new immigration law and the news media largely stood in support of the unconstitutional executive action rather than focus on the stall tactics of the party supporting the illegal move. When the news media did not present both sides of the issue it was up to the Congressional members to bring focus to the problem. Unfortunately, Congress failed to do their job and it was left to the Courts to stop the unconstitutional action taken by the POTUS. One party was the party of NO DEBATE & VOTE, while the other party was the party of NO STAND ON CONSTITUTIONAL PRINCIPLE. We the People were the losers, while foreigners in this Country illegally were the possible winners, pending the Courts' decision. The power of te purse must be supported by both Congress AND the news media, otherwise our Constitutional liberties will be sacrificed in the future. How sad for US.
