We need a living wage. When I started working in 1980, minimum wage was $3.10 an hour. Today, it's $7.25 an hour. Average price of a car in 1980 was $7,200; today, it's $33,000. Average price of a house in 1980 was $76,000; today, it's $188,000. A full time job at minimum wage today grosses $15,080 a year, before taxes. An increase to $13 an hour would gross an employee $27,040. Even at $13 an hour, it's barely a living wage. Don't believe it when people say an increase will be a job-killer. The extra money for these workers will be an immediate boost to the economy as it will be spent on goods and services.
