As a mother of a young son, I too join the plea of so many parents that the government take some tangible action towards gun control. Mental health and prevention must also be addressed, but if we can prevent even one less gun to get into the hands of the wrong person, isn't it worth it? It is entirely too easy for an individual to obtain a gun--stronger background checks (6-months or more) should be REQUIRED.
I also do not believe arming teachers is a productive solution. Most of the people who commit these mass-shootings end up taking their own life anyway--their goal is to kill as many people as possible and then usually, themselves. Arming teachers would not prevent this, it would at best help to take out an active shooter after they have already caused considerable damage and then keep them from having to take their own life as well. All arming teachers does is create more confusion and possibility for someone else to get hurt.
Please do the right thing, even if it means going against your political party's agenda. If you don't believe in protecting innocent people and in particular, children, why be in public service at all?
