This resolution would reaffirm San Francisco’s status as a sanctuary city for unauthorized immigrants.

Sanctuary cities are equipped with policies designed to shield unauthorized immigrants from prosecution and deportation. San Francisco has been considered a sanctuary city for the past 26 years.

Specifically, this resolution would state that the city is resolved to not participate in the Priority Enforcement Program (PEP). The resolution identifies PEP as “yet another mass deportation program that separates families, undermines community trust in law enforcement…” This legislation would request that the sheriff’s department to not participate in PEP.

“It’s the federal government having basically put lipstick on a pig that is still a pig,” stated Supervisor David Campos, who introduced this resolution. “PEP, like Secure Communities, is a dragnet program that essentially tries to entangle local law enforcement into immigration enforcement.”

The resolution further notes that the Board of Supervisors would support the existing City and County of Refuge and Due Process Ordinances.
