For an administration and Congress who is supposedly opposed to the federal government overstepping there surely does seem to be a good bit of Big Brother shenanigans going on. So far as I know every state already has a plan in place for dealing with emergency/crisis situations. Here in Oklahoma we are "Red Dirt Ready" with an Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security program that reaches out to every county and involves law enforcement, fire departments, state and local agencies, medical personnel and even trained citizen volunteers and public service announcements. Plans are developed and drills are carried out. One of the nice things is reportedly the amount of local input identifying issues and solutions. I can't imagine other states not having similar plans in place. It appears the best strategy for crisis response is generally federal resources supporting a locally driven response. So, I really do not see the benefit of this bill. It seems at best a duplication of services and a waste of time, money (CBO estimate?) and energy. At worst it could easily become a tool to unnecessarily stoke fear in order to create a false sense of need for a more militarized state. No thanks. It is good for DHS to provide helpful hints and guidance and to consult and coordinate with the appropriate state and local agencies. But there is no point to a nation wide drill. Congress is sticking its nose where it doesn't belong. Perhaps in times past I would not have seen much of a problem with this proposal. However the current environment and this administration's heavy handedness and corruption have altered my perspective. If we want to have a nation wide drill to improve this country how about a national voters' drill to ensure voter preparedness by making sure everyone is registered, informed, has proper ID and a plan for getting to the polls? Then let's make Election Day a national holiday as other countries do to encourage voter turnout and celebrate democracy. I'm convinced that would be a far more effective way to keep this nation safe and a better use of tax money. Or, we could always spend the money this proposed bill would cost on healthcare....
