This bill — the Drug Cartel Terrorist Designation Act — would designate three specific Mexican drug cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). This would have the effect of: 1) making it illegal for anyone to assist cartels or their employees, 2) blocking all identified cartel personnel from legally entering the U.S., 3) allowing the Treasury Secretary to block all cartel assets, and 4) “further stigmatizing” cartels at home and abroad.

The cartels that’d be designated FTOs under this bill are:

Reynosa/Los Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel.
Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
Cartel Del Noreste (CDN) faction of Los Zetas.
