Ok, first, gun violence is not a disease, mental disorders are diseases. Secondly, All commercial gun sales already have to undergo a background check, commercial dealers who set up at local gun shows have to run background checks on every firearm they sell. Internet sales through commercial dealers must undergo a background check, you purchase the weapon from the dealer then it MUST be shipped to a dealer with a Federal Firearms License where standard paperwork must be fill out and a background check performed before you can take possession of the firearm. Also convicted felons, and the adjudicated mentally ill are already prohibited from owning fire arms, as well as those who are addicted to illegal and/or prescription drugs, those who have been convicted of certain domestic violence charges and illegal aliens. All of these questions are asked on the paperwork and then checked through the instant background check. The only firearms transfers that can legally be done with out a background check is a transfer that is between private citizens and then it is still a crime to knowingly transfer to someone who is barred from owning a firearm. This bill in effect does nothing new, except perhaps bribe state and local governments to do a job that they are already supposed to be doing. Perhaps instead of making things more difficult on law abiding citizens maybe people should start doing their jobs. Such as the people who do the reporting. Or maybe the officers who stood outside the school and did nothing while children were being murdered. Or maybe the parents who constantly coddle and baby their children or even worse just flat out ignore them. We don’t need more or redundant laws, we do not need the Constitutional rights of law abiding citizens infringed upon, we need the laws we already have in place enforced, we need people to take responsibility and do their job.
