A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Have you ever heard that phrase before? In this country we are not a Third World country we are highly technical and we need to glean that energy.
For what reason I don’t know but somehow or rather the Republicans want to bring in trained people from other countries. But the people that are working here that are paying taxes they’re turning their backs on them and the money would go back to our country anyways not to a foreign country and the companies would definitely benefit from this type of program.
I hired in 1970 for Chrysler but came into the tail end of a semi skilled position only because I got transferred to another plant within the corporation my home plant didn’t do anything with me and I had a lot to offer I worked full-time 60 hours a week and more and went to school at night did it for years and years and years and years. Had the potential but never was recognized once I got it from the other plant there was no stopping me I excelled and did as well as any male employee. It did cause some hard feelings because they wanted to get into apprenticeship programs to and I understand that but when I retired I think we still only have one female electrician, one one from each of the trades in the whole plant and I think in the whole corporation. Very scarce hard to find any improvement there. Women were definitely being discriminated against. And I think the company finally realize that if they didn’t do something pretty soon they were going to be paying more in legal fees.
It was a great program the apprenticeship program and for many many years we kept asking why aren’t they offering it again? It helped many people get a leg up and higher pay rate where they could support their families in a better manner after all of their efforts they needed to be rewarded and more people need to be considered for the program and they had taken it down to zero nothing. I was told the company wasn’t getting any support from the government on it I don’t know? Whatever it was it needed to be reenacted. My mind is a terrible thing to waste and for many years that happened over and over and over again.
