Millions of people who are not citizens are facing a climate of fear (of getting deported back to countries which hey flef out of legitimate fear of persecution and violence). Asking about citizenship on the census would give ICE a way to track the many law-abiding and hard-working people who deserve to become citizens. Wrey in climate is world wide xenophobia right now. I can never forget that in 1923 my great grandma and my then-6-year-old grandma fled the Russian pogroms against Jews to come to this country, but that one year later the Reed-Johnson act was signed into law barring immigrants just like them. Citizenship is often a matter of timing and luck and thus leaves too many deserving people out who desperately need assylum.
