The legacy that slavery holds on this country is pervasive. Thought we cannot remember a time where it was legal, it has existed in our country for 36% of the USAs history. This is not even taking into account the struggle and time that African Americans had to go through to obtain the same legal rights as others in the USA.
While the desire to try to distance ourselves from this legacy is pervasive, we must acknowledge the continued harm the past has done to marginalized people. We, as individuals have not actively oppressed the African American Community, but as people who have benefited from that shameful past, we have a responsibility to at least look into trying to ease the continued suffering that many face today.
For those who don’t believe in this form of altruism, I’m linking a video showing how giving does not necessarily mean losing. Please give it a watch!
