I have been working to get the ERA into our Constitution since I was 25, in Indiana when you had to go door to door to get signatures on a petition. It passed there in 1977. I was in Richmond in the gallery of the House when it passed both Senate and House. I am 67 years old. How much longer should I have to wait to have my rights formally enshrined in our founding document? Don’t tell me to wait any longer. For those who think that women already have “all the rights”, not so. Some states have equal rights in their state constitutions but not all do. Bills like the Violence Against Women Act can be overturned or not renewed like this past year. Women still don’t have equal pay for equal work in many cases. If a case comes before the Supreme Court that involves women’s rights we have no standing. “Certainly the Constitution does not require discrimination on the basis of sex. The only issue is whether it prohibits it. It does not.” Antonin Scalia
