20 Veterans die by suicide a day. 65% of those by fire arms. 18% of the people who die by suicide in this country are Veterans.Owning a fire arm dramatically increases the risk a person will compete a suicide. Diagnoses of PTSD and depression are risk factors for suicide. I am figuring out the details of this bill and I really hate the phrase "mentally defective." The idea of judge deciding over the VA could be good as it removes the bias and the pressure of that decision falling in the hands of a mental health professional trying to establish rapport and treat a Veteran. I find the term "mentally defective" horribly offensive and don't think anyone should have to wear that label. So I'm not voting yay/nay. I don't think it's asking too much for Veterans (or anyone for that matter) with mental health conditions to seek additional clearance to purchase a fire arm. They've kept us safe; I'd like to keep them safe.
