I am a retired educator with more than three decades working on issues of equity and diversity in public education. I applaud the goal here but remain unconvinced this bill would do much more than throw money at the problem. Since it is a voluntary grant program, I'd be concerned most of the funding would miss those schools most in need of change. What we have is a deeply embedded systemic problem, and quick fix solutions like this risk song more harm than good.
I agree with others here that we should wait until we have a new secretary of education and then work closely with the DOE to develop a well thought plan for addressing racial equity and diversity issues in schools., with a focus on structural and systemic changes. To develop this plan, I'd recommend a commission be established led by the most highly qualified BIPOC educational leaders, practitioners and researchers we can get. I can think of quite a few.
