We are a nation of immigrants. We need to create a path to citizenship for those who are here while simultaneously enforcing the immigration laws we have. In addition, the federal government is asking states to perform federal immigration functions. The federal government should not be permitted to dictate that cities create an immigration detention and enforcement agency with federal dollars to do federal work. I understand arresting and deportation of criminals, but the roundup of people merely because they fall into a category of "immigrant" is unacceptable. Immigrants have built this country. The vast majority of immigrants in our country currently are positively impacting our economy, society and quality of life. Do we have border and immigration issues to address? Absolutely. Is there enough teeth and enforcement of our current laws? I think not. But those are our failures. We must address our failures, create a path to citizenship for those who are here, and be fair in how we treat people and families who are here and people who are contemplating a move to our country.
