I have read all of the opposing opinions, and I sympathize with the “market solution” view. However, I propose the following scenario. I book a flight because I MUST be in a certain place at a certain time. No amount of incentive will induce me to abandon my purpose. I have paid my money to the airline in good faith, and the airline has seated me on my flight. They should not remove me forcibly from my seat, and only the government can prevent them from doing so. The free market cannot solve this particular situation.
