Should Congress Have to Approve Sales of Nuclear Technology to Saudi Arabia by U.S. Companies?

👍🏻House Bill H.R. 1471 AKA the “Saudi Nuclear Nonproliferation Act”👍🏻 I’m in support of and recommend the passage of the House Bill H.R. 1471 AKA the “Saudi Nuclear Nonproliferation Act of 2019” which would require affirmative congressional approval of any potential formal nuclear trade deal with Saudi Arabia, as outlined under Section 123 of the Atomic Energy Act. This bill would also clarify that Congress believes that no Section 123 agreement with Saudi Arabia should be approved until: 1) the Kingdom commits to forego any uranium enrichment of spent fuel reprocessing activities within its territory; 2) the Kingdom agrees to implement the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Additional Protocol. We should NOT combine “NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION” and the death of U.S. journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as they are two separate and distinct, issues. Saudi Arabia’s nuclear ambitions are well-known and documented. Given this, it’s important to ensure that nuclear technology transferred by U.S. companies to the Kingdom isn’t used to build nuclear weapons.
