With an increase in cost for an employee unrelated to the working capacity of the individual, the business will not simply eat the cost, and instead there will be a number of negative repercussions. - Low skilled workers will not fulfill the needs of the company to meet the demand of higher wages, and will be fired or may never even have a chance to get the job - Companies will increase the price of their products, with the irony being that these low paying jobs are typically producing low cost goods, increasing the cost of living for these very workers - Entry level positions will have higher competition, raising unemployment among the most unfortunate among us- Companies will seek alternatives to human labor, streamlining and automating these processes as technology becomes cheaper - Companies will cut the number of workers needed, with some workers now making no money, as compared to at least some money before. By following through with this proposal, it will only hurt the people it was supposed to help, with invisible and unintended consequences brought on through the ignorance of people who, no matter how noble their intentions, do not understand the complexities of a free market. Emotional fervor and even noble intentions will not replace the reality of the situation. While I can appreciate the want to help those who need it, this will unfortunately do nothing but hurt them, the small and medium businesses that they work for, and the middle class, as prices rise while jobs become even more scarce. Please, fight with the same passion as before, but make sure that you know the consequences of your fight, and the repercussions it will have once emotional want gives way to logical consequences.
