Unless someone has discovered a way to create more clean water on this planet that is cheaper than simply not polluting it, conservation of one of life's essential ingredients should be a no brainer. That companies can externalize their costs to the environment is a hold-over mentality from a time when people thought we could just treat the land as giant dumpster because there was so much of it. Well, there isn't so much of it any more and water is becoming increasingly a contested resource. It is predicted that in the next 5 years as many as 30 million Americans will not be able to afford their water bills, water will just become too expensive. This isn't about jobs, it's about corporations taking care of their workers and not just their shareholders and executives. Blaming the environment for job loss is misdirection. Coal mining companies and any company that produces a toxic waste product should build the cost of safely disposing of it into their operating budges and business model. No welfare for these guys.
