All standard immigration should be based on a person’s abilities and history. We should admit people with clean records, needed skill sets, and a strong desire to integrate into our society. Lottery based chain migration is bad for crime, bad for state budgets, bad for our public schools and bad for domestic unity. Worse, it lowers wages and steals opportunities from our own people with the lowest incomes and least education. We owe it to our less fortunate rural, urban, and disabled citizens to base immigration off of wage growth and unemployment numbers among minority groups such as black Americans and legal immigrants. It’s not racist to believe in making policies that benefit our least fortunate citizens and lawful residents. Anyone saying a merit based system is racist isn’t making a sound legal or policy argument. Calling everything and everyone a racist is not productive and it doesn’t advance our underserved, underperforming communities and groups.
