We are a culture in which dogs and cats are household pets, and dogs work in partnership with us in many walks of life. Not only is it a betrayal of this family-like relationship to allow slaughter of these animals, which have a history of inter-species partnership that has shaped the very way they view and behave toward us, as it has shaped the way we view them, but crime is a factor we must consider as well. I believe if slaughter of these species for human consumption were allowed, pets would be stolen for slaughter. Already we see rumors they are stolen for use as bait in training fighting dogs. I do not favor laws that would encourage people who move here from dog-eating cultures to continue that particular cultural tradition. I have no problem with welcoming immigrants from all cultures to our society, and I believe our own culture is enriched by welcoming people with diverse backgrounds. But I do not believe the particular custom of viewing our culture’s pets and working partners as food would in any way enrich our society’s worldview. To the contrary, it would make us a little bit less empathetic and compassionate than we are. Consumption of the meat of predators can only arise in cultures where the desperation of poverty and starvation has driven people to survive that way. We are not short of protein or meat species here. We do not need to add any more. It is ridiculous to hear that anyone is even considering this. Enough!
