We already have laws and punishments for murder and various states of mind behind the murders and a whole host of extenuating circumstances used in sentencing. It's also well known that judges and juries typically levy harsher sentences on those who murder first responders. So, why this bill? It reeks of someone trying to win the law and order vote with a bill that adds little to nothing of real value, but can be used in campaign ads, i.e., political grandstanding. Can congress instead please focus on real and pressing issues?
