Helen S. Settles is working to Justice for Alton Sterling

Helen S. Settles

This campaign matters to me, because for 36 years as a school teacher(retired), I instilled in my students, that they mattered, that they could accomplish whatever their hearts desired, as long as they worked hard and contributed positively to the world around them.
As a teacher, I witnessed so many young people's lives stuffed out needlessly by gun violence, before they could" be all they could be".
I talked to them about the need to get an education and go on to college and come back to their community and have a positive impact.
Then they witness killings after killings of young black males over and over by white police officers throughout this nation and they look to us, their elders and wonder why we are still telling them to remain calm and continue to be positive members of their communities. They say what about Eric Gardner, Tamir Rice, Travon Martin, Akai Gurley, Freddy Gray and now Jamar Clarke, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, when does it end?
What do I say to them, who are looking to me and the other elders of our communities? How can I remain steadfast in my continual urgings to them, to remain positive and committed, when I am struggling with so many emotions right now.
There must be justice rendered here or I am afraid that everything that I instilled into my students for 36 years will be for naught.
I have seen the Eric Gardner video over and over again, the same for the Alton Sterling video and the Philando Castile video and I cannot understand the injustices that is played out in front of my eyes and the eyes of the world. What scares me the most is that these officers of the 3 recent killings will never be held accountable, as witnessed by the findings of the Staten Island Grand Jury in the clearing of officer Panteleo in the choking death of Eric Gardner, two years ago(July 17, 2014).
I am urging my friends and family to sign any and all petitions that call for justice for Alton Sterling and all the murdered men and women and their families.
Start your own campaigns and remember to exercise your right to vote in the next presidential elections. the people must rise up and say "NO MORE, NO MORE"
