I strongly urge my enlightened friends to keep exploration out of this pristine
area which is home to endangered mountain gorillas. I was priviledged to trek to observe these gentle, intelligent giants (who share over 96% of our DNA) this spring. I witnessed the troop nuturing their young, supervising their overactive juveniles and, while exhibiting bonding behaviour, more universal than our own, within their group while accepting our presence. They gazed at us with eyes that were intelligent..almost TOO human....and tolerated our intrusion into their world.
Because of humans, mountain gorillas were almost hunted to extinction. They are barely maintaining their numbers now, despite careful protection. Oil exploration would be disruptive and potentially catastrophic - it is INCONCEIVABLE that any company be allowed into this area. Despite promises and assurances in the past, oil companies have a dismal track record in protecting the environment - ask anyone in Louisiana if you need proof!
Please join me in keeping oil exploration out of Virunga National Park!
