Listen up California friends!
Our state currently maintains a LIFETIME ban on people with prior drug-related felony convictions from receiving basic needs assistance and employment services through the CalWORKs and CalFresh programs.
Next week I will be going to Sacramento with St. Anthony's Foundation and advocating that this ban be lifted. St. Anthony Foundation serves many people who have paid their debt to society, have been released from jail or prison, and are working hard to build a better life for themselves and their families. As these people work to get their lives back on track, they face barriers in finding employment, housing, and keeping food on the table. Access to work supports and basic needs grants through the CalWORKs program and nutrition assistance through the CalFresh program can help reduce recidivism, contribute to successful re-entry of individuals who have been incarcerated, and keep our communities safer.
I support SB 1029 and want to encourage all of you to know about it, talk about it and sign this petition.
