What is Causes?

Causes is the world’s largest campaigning platform. We connect people who support a common cause and empower them to take action together. We’re a for-profit, tech company powered by the belief that leveraging technology is the best way to make the world a better place.

Is Causes free to use?

Yes, any individual, political organization or nonprofit organization can start a campaign on Causes free of charge. Brands seeking partnership opportunities should visit our Advertise page.

Can anyone start a campaign?

Yes, anyone can start a campaign as long as it adheres to our community guidelines. To learn more, visit our help desk article and learn how to start a campaign.

Do I need to sign in to take an action (pledge, petition, fundraiser)?

Yes, we require everyone to sign in with either their Facebook account or email address. Real identities add validity to petitions, pledges and donations.

Can I join Causes without signing into Facebook?

Yes, you can sign up using your email address, full name, and date of birth.

Why does Facebook ask for my permissions when logging in to Causes with Facebook Connect?

Facebook requires all 3rd party applications, like Causes, to provide certain permissions in order to connect your account.

Why can’t I sign in to Causes using my Facebook account on Chrome for iOS.

At this time, Facebook Connect does not support Chrome for the iOS browser. We suggest using Safari, which comes pre-installed on all iOS devices. If you prefer to to continue using Chrome for iOS, you can sign in using your email address.

Why do you ask for my birthday when I sign up using email?

We ask for birth dates in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Will you ever sell my contact information?

Nope, we won’t sell your email address or any other form of personal contact information. Any personal data collected when you create a Causes account or connect with a social network (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) will only be used as stated in our Privacy Policy.

How does Causes make money?

Causes is an ad-supported platform that works with major companies and nonprofits to support their socially-responsible programs and initiatives through sponsored campaigns.

Who creates the content on the site?

Causes is an open platform and provides individuals, organizations, and brands with the tools to run campaigns and create real impact. Campaign leaders (people who start campaigns) are responsible for and have full control over every aspect of their campaigns, from the photo used to how many updates they send. Anyone can launch a campaign on Causes, as long as it adheres to our guidelines and terms of use.

Do you have a mobile app?

While we do not currently offer a mobile app for iPhone or Android, our site is designed to work on almost every device and web browser.

How do I edit or delete my post?

To edit or delete a post, visit the post page by clicking directly on the post. Then, click the Edit or Delete button.

Account Settings

I forgot my password. What do I do?

You can reset your password by visiting https://www.causes.com/password_resets/new. Simply enter your email address and a password reset email will be sent to you. If you don’t receive an email, be sure to check your spam folder.

How do I change my password?

To change your password, click on your profile icon in the upper right on the navigation bar and go to Settings. In the settings menu, you will see a tab to change your password. Alternatively, you can visit https://www.causes.com/account/password.

I’m receiving too many emails. How do I change my communication preferences?

To manage which emails you receive, click on your profile picture in the upper right on the navigation bar and go to Settings and then click on the Email Settings tab. Alternatively, you can visit https://www.causes.com/account/email.

How do I change my profile settings?

To change your profile settings, click on your profile picture in the upper right on the navigation bar and go to Settings. Alternatively, you can visit https://www.causes.com/account/profile.

Can I create a customized URL for my profile?

Yes, a customized URL is easier to share and discover. To customize your profile’s URL, click on your profile picture in the upper right on the navigation bar and go to Settings. Alternatively, you can visit https://www.causes.com/account/profile. Then, enter the customized URL in the field below the section that says Choose your unique address. As a best practice, only use alphanumeric characters. If needed, use a hyphen to separate words. For example, www.causes.com/john-doe.

How do I manage my privacy settings?

To change your privacy settings, click on your profile picture in the upper right on the navigation bar and go to Settings. Then, select Privacy from the navigation bar on the left. Alternatively, you can visit [https://www.causes.com/account/privacy](https://www.causes.com/account/privacy].

Can I disconnect my Facebook, Twitter and/or Linkedin accounts from my Causes account?

If you wish to disconnect any of your social networks from your Causes account, please contact support.

How can I delete my profile/account?

Before deleting your account, we’d love to see if we can improve your experience. Contact support and tell us how we can help.

If you are sure you want to delete your Causes account, click on your profile picture in the upper right on the navigation bar, go to Settings and then click on the Privacy tab. Within your Privacy settings, there is an option to delete your account. Alternatively, you can visit https://www.causes.com/account/privacy.

Participating in a Campaign

How do I learn more about a campaign?

Clicking on the short description below a campaign’s title will take you to a page containing an in-depth description of the campaign. If you have more questions about the campaign, we suggest sending a personal message to the campaign leader by going to the leader’s profile and clicking on the envelope icon next to their name.

How do I send a message to another member?

To send a message to another member, go to their profile and click on the envelope icon next to their name.

How can I invite friends to a campaign?

To invite friends, navigate back to the campaign and go to the petition, pledge, or fundraiser by clicking on the Read more about this petition/pledge/fundraiser text link. On the next page you will see a grey Invite friends button. You can also share campaigns and posts to your social networks by clicking on the Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn icons.

What is a personal campaign? Why should I start one?

Personal campaigns allow you to own a piece of the main campaign. By starting a personal campaign, you’re making a commitment to help the overall goal of the campaign by getting a certain number of signatures, pledges, or donations. You have the option to start a personal campaign after taking action on a campaign (pledge, petition, or fundraiser).

How do I contact the leader of a campaign?

To contact any other member on Causes, go to their profile and click the envelope icon next to their name.

I accidentally took an action (pledge, petition, fundraiser). How can I undo this?

Once you take an action, that action cannot be undone. If you accidentally made a donation for an amount greater than you intended, please contact support.

Can I unsend invitations?

Unfortunately, you cannot unsend invitations. To make sure you don’t accidentally send invitations, double check that you’ve only selected the friends that you want to receive them. It’s like carpenters always say -- measure twice, cut once.

Can I take an action (pledge, petition, fundraiser) anonymously?

We do not support anonymously making donations, taking pledges, or signing petitions.

How do I share my post to Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn?

Click on the Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn icon to share your post directly from the post page.

Starting & Running a Campaign

How do I grow support for my campaign?

You can grow support by sharing your campaign with your friends, family, and other connections on social media and with your supporters on Causes. When you take an action (pledge, petition, fundraiser), you will see an option to share on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Your campaign supporters are also able to help grow your campaign’s support by creating personal campaigns.

Can members take an action (pledge, petition, fundraiser) after the goal has been met?

Yes, the actions that are taken after the goal has been reached will continue to show up on the progress bar.

Can I merge my fundraiser from other websites to Causes?

Fundraisers started on other websites cannot be merged with a Causes campaign.

Can I add petition signatures from other sources to my Causes petition?

We do not have an option to add signatures from petitions started on other sites to petitions on Causes. We recommend combining the signatures when delivering them.

Why can I only fundraise for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization?

At the moment, our payment-processing service, Network for Good, only allows donations to be made to a United States based nonprofit organizations with a 501(c)(3) status.

Does Causes make money from donations?

Causes is an ad-supported platform that receives $0 from donations and doesn’t take an additional fee from transactions. All donations are sent directly to a Guidestar-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, minus a 4.75% processing fee charged by our payment processor, Network for Good.

Does Causes provide embeddable widgets?

At the moment, we don’t offer any embeddable widgets. You can still easily place a link to your campaign on your blog or website.

What is a personal campaign?

Personal campaigns allow your supporters to go above and beyond to help gather support for your main campaign. Campaign supporters make a commitment to help your campaign by getting a certain number of signatures, pledges, or donations. Only people who have supported your campaign by taking an action (pledge, petition, fundraiser) will see the option to start a personal campaign.

How do I download petition signatures?

As a campaign leader, you can download your petition signatures by:

How can I edit my campaign’s details?

You can edit your campaign's details by going to your campaign page and clicking on Edit campaign details text link on the right of the page (below your actions).

How do I edit my petition, pledge, or fundraiser?

While on your campaign page, you can click Manage actions on the top right corner of your listed actions.

How do I change the deadline for my petition, pledge, or fundraiser?

Go to your campaign page and click Manage actions on the top right corner of the action. You will be able to edit the action’s details, including the deadline.

How do I add a campaign leader?

If you would like to add a campaign leader to your campaign, please contact support and we can add the additional leaders on your behalf.

How do I delete my campaign?

You can delete your campaign by clicking on the Edit campaign details text link (below your actions) on your campaign page, click the Basics tab and click the Delete campaign button.

Can I delete posts from other members on my campaign?

If you are the campaign leader, you can delete a post by clicking on the post and clicking Delete on the following page.

How big should my campaign photo be?

For best results, we recommend using a campaign photo that is at least 1000 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall.

How do I find a great campaign photo?

If you need help finding a great campaign photo, you can use the advanced search features on Google Image search and Flickr to find photos that are available under a Creative Commons license. These photos are typically not subject to copyright laws as long as they are used in a manner stated by the photo’s Creative Commons license. If that’s all too complicated, use a photo that you own.

Organizations

How do I create an organization profile?

Nonprofit and political organizations can submit a request for an organization profile here.

How do I start a campaign as an organization?

When using Causes as your organization, you can start a campaign by clicking Campaigns on the top navigation bar and then clicking Start a campaign.

How do I add another administrator to my organization?

You can add other administrators to your organization profile by clicking edit your profile on your organization profile. Then click Administrators and enter the email address of the Causes member you want to add as administrator.

Note: If the person you're trying to add does not have a Causes account, they'll need to create one by signing up with their Facebook account or an email address.

How do I access donor information?

If you're having issues accessing your donor information, please contact support.

Who do I contact if I’m having problems with donations made to my organization?

Donations on Causes are processed by Network For Good. To check on the status of specific donations or to report an error, please email Network For Good directly at donations@networkforgood.org.
