A stolen inheritance is still a blight upon descendants. This country has never reckoned with the terrible treatment of slaves and their descendants. Between failures of reconstruction and Jim Crow, slaves and their descendants have never been properly compensated for the horrendous treatment at the hands of the majority. Generations of people have benefited from the wealth that black hands created. And even those who were immigrants benefited, because they would never have come here without the wealth that those black hands created. As a moral matter, there should be some form of reparations. It will probably never be adequate, but there should be something. At the very least, the subject could be studied and H.R. 40 should be passed.
