The Supreme Court will allow President Trump to enforce his ban on transgender people serving in the military, at least for a while. The court’s 5-4 order will let the policy move forward while it works its way through the courts and toward a Supreme Court ruling on its merits.

Between the lines: The court’s 4 liberal justices would have kept Trump’s ban on ice during the legal appeals — a reminder that Trump’s ability to reshape the federal judiciary is a legacy that will outlast almost any specific policy.
