\nA Guatemalan mother is suing ICE, claiming her 19-month-old daughter died shortly after being released from an ICE facility in south Texas. \"Nobody at any time decided to actually have a pediatrician or a doctor see the child,\" said Benard Dreyer, the director of pediatrics at the Bellevue Hospital Center in New York, who reviewed the child's medical records. The news comes as the Trump administration looks to expand its use of detention facilities to house immigrants who cross the border illegally. Click here for the full story, including ICE's response.
\nCalifornia will become the first state in the nation to end the cash bail system. Instead of defendants being required to pay in order to be released before trial, local courts will decide which individuals to keep in custody and whom to release as they await trial. Sen. Robert Hertzberg, a co-author of the California Money Bail Reform Act, tweeted: \"Our path to a more just criminal justice system is not complete, but today it made a transformational shift away from valuing private wealth and toward protecting public safety.\" Should the U.S. follow California’s lead and end the cash bail system? \nElizabeth Warren (D-MA) has unveiled a broad anti-corruption and government reform bill aimed at reducing corporate influence in politics. If passed, the Anti-Corruption and Public Integrity Act would impose a lifetime ban on lobbying by presidents and members of Congress and prohibit elected officials from owning or trading stock while in office. \nRepublican Senators are hoping Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) will appoint a successor to Sen. John McCain who, unlike the late senator, would support the GOP’s efforts to repeal Obamacare. Republican Sen. Ron Johnson (WI) told The Hill he hopes Arizona’s next senator will be a “strong ally” who “recognizes that Obamacare is not a proper solution.” Read what Johnson's colleagues had to say here.

\nNew research shows that real estate properties in areas affected by extreme weather and sea-level rise are losing value relative to less exposed properties. Homes that are vulnerable to rising sea levels currently sell for around 7 percent less than similar, unexposed properties, according to a recent study. By 2100, the homes of 4.7 million Americans could be vulnerable to rising sea levels, posing a threat to nearly one trillion dollars in coastal real estate. How many school shootings took place in the 2015-2016 school year?

Depends whom you ask.

The Department of Education reported this spring that in the 2015-2016 school year, “nearly 240 schools … reported at least 1 incident involving a school-related shooting.”

But an NPR investigation found that more than two-thirds of school shootings reported by the DOE never happened.

While Americans debate how to prevent school shootings, most agree that no child should experience such a thing. Tackling a problem starts with accurate information.
